DIY project: Baby cast with plaster – memories you can hold

There are moments in life you want to hold on to forever. Those tiny feet, those curious little hands – that special time when babies are still so small and delicate passes far too quickly. To make sure those memories don’t fade, we’re sharing a DIY project with you today that’s not only beautiful but also deeply personal: baby hand and foot casts made from plaster – a project to do yourself!

A plaster cast is more than just decoration. It’s a loving keepsake that preserves the magic of new beginnings. Whether as a gift, a piece of decor or a private memento – a cast of little baby hands or feet is a heartfelt treasure for life.

Materials List

You have two options:

• Complete kit – ideal for beginners
• Individual purchase – more affordable, especially if you plan on making several casts

What you’ll need:

• 500 g alginate (e.g., from dental supply stores)
• 500–1000 g casting plaster
• 1 kitchen scale
•  1 measuring jug (e.g., massimo)
•  1 whisk or hand mixer
• 2 containers (one each for alginate & plaster), e.g., camilla mixing bowl, matteo measuring cup, or – for larger casts – buckets like mika or bent
•  1 helping hand (assistant)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Decide on the pose

Would you like to mold a baby hand, a foot or maybe even several fingers together with mom or dad? Practice the pose briefly – because alginate sets quickly! This will also help you choose the right container for mixing and molding. For smaller motifs like a baby hand or foot, a smaller bowl such as camilla (1.5 liters) may be sufficient. Planning a cast with several hands? Then a bucket like mika (5 liters) or a long container like bent might be best.

2. Mix the alginate

Once you’ve chosen the container in step 1, you can prepare the molding mixture. Alginate is a natural substance (made from brown algae) that reacts quickly with water, gels within a few minutes, and sets slightly. Perfect for capturing fine details like baby skin!

Tip: Cold water slows down the reaction.

Mixing ratio:
• 200 ml water = 60 g alginate
• 400 ml water = 120 g alginate
• 1000 ml water = 300 g alginate
Stir quickly and thoroughly – then pour into the container!

3. Take the cast

Now comes the big moment: gently place the little hand (or foot) into the alginate in the desired pose. Having a second person help is highly recommended!

Important: The skin should not touch the edge of the container.
After approx. 3 minutes, the mixture will have set – but remain flexible. You can then gently remove the little hand or foot.

4. Pour the plaster

Mix the plaster with water in a mixing bowl (camilla) or bucket (mika) – preferably slightly runnier. Start by pouring in a small amount of plaster and gently tap the container to release air bubbles. Then slowly add the rest.

Drying time: Let it sit at least overnight.

5. Remove the mold & be amazed

The next day, carefully remove the alginate. Use a toothpick or fine brush for small details. And then: admire your result and celebrate!

Extra Tip: Seal it!

A layer of clear varnish protects your plaster cast from dust, moisture, and scratches – and helps preserve it for many years.
