organising careers fairs – keeeper trainee testimonies (part 2)

keep on working, learning and having fun. does that sound strange? no, for keeeper it is a reality, and one that we live and breathe every day. team spirit, camaraderie and living cohesion mix with exciting tasks and opportunities to be actively and creatively involved – no matter how long you have been here. inter alia, our trainees get involved in the organisation, planning and setting up of careers fairs. they experience fun times and creativity, excitement and nail-biting moments, feedback and success, but one thing is certain: it is never boring. our trainee kevin gives us his perspective.

Hi, I’m Kevin, and I am currently training to become an industrial manager with keeeper. I rotate through different departments such as purchasing, IT, marketing and product management, accounting, and distribution. That is great, because I can find out which field is the best for me. I quickly realised that a keeeper traineeship was very diverse, and that trainees were trusted from the very beginning. Even in my first year of training, I was able to be actively involved in planning and organising the careers fair stand. This year, the organisation of the careers fair in Espelkamp was especially exciting because we had a brand new stand. That considerably simplified the on-site set-up. That was not just because we could help keeeper employees with their work on a larger scale, but we could also get an insight into what went on behind the scenes. We could save time preparing, setting up and dismantling, focussing instead on other ideas and measures.

This year, for example, we had the idea of using a 3D pen as a playful way of showing visitors to our stand how hard it is to shape plastic. The 3D pen was a real highlight, and attracted a great deal of interest. For example, we could use the pen to draw or print Signet the squirrel. It worked very well, and visitors could take a keeeper souvenir home with them. We were on hand to answer students’ questions about keeeper and the squirrel. There were lots of questions, and it was great to introduce the students to the day-to-day work of a medium-sized plastics company, and to inspire them.

Each trainee had a task: For example, some of us were “scouts”, and were responsible for leading groups of interested students to the stand, and the correct point of contact. At such careers fairs, there is always so much going on, and some students are nervous – I guess we all know that. Especially when everything is completely new. Others helped to dismantle the stand. Also: Organisation is only half of the battle! Improvisation is evidently the other half. Through teamwork, we solved unforeseen challenges. How do you know whether or not a brand new trade fair stall has been dismantled and stored correctly? There were instructions… but as luck would have it, they disappeared when we needed them, and we couldn’t find them anywhere! All I can say is, keep on learning. In other words: Heads together, think together. That worked very well, the stand was dismantled quickly – and lo and behold: Just at that moment, the instructions showed up again! We can all laugh about it now… and such long and short anecdotes are invaluable – for the team, for the memory, for the learning effects, and for yourself. At the end of the day, everything went well, and we are already looking forward to the next keeeper projects.
